Honest journalism about an honest budget

If you read anything on the budget, it should be Hilary Joffe’s very fine analysis in Business Day.  It ends with this insight:

“Ironically, perhaps, it’s the deficit that has the best hope of reining in any mad populist aspirations anyone in power might have. Manuel has created space for the new government to carry on delivering on the most important of its promises, even though the global economy is at nearly zero growth and SA’s is not that much better. But that space will be limited for the next few years and, for the new government, fiscal discipline will be not an ideology but a necessity. It is best to be honest about that now.”
